There are a group of RV holding tank chemicals that truly perform as stated, but what is the best holding tank treatment at the best price?
I think most RVers go through a phase where they will buy just about any well reviewed holding tank chemical if it's the perceived best price. Typically, people become a little more discerning about how the product actually works ie:
• does it break down waste?
• does it break down paper?
• does it actually eliminate odor?
There are a few holding tank treatments on the market that actually perform as described, but the perceived best price may not be obvious up front.
If you're like me, you do a LOT of your shopping on Amazon...
So let's take a look at the screenshot below for the search: "RV holding tank treatment" on Amazon.
When looking at the results below which product do you perceive as the best value?
This screenshot happens to show 3 of the BEST performing holding tank treatments on the market today.
When I look at the results, at first glance the Walex Porta-Pak appears to be the best deal. Let's look beyond the initial price per product...
This is important, because the Happy Campers product is often referred to as the "most expensive treatment" in many forum comments sections. I would like to disprove this common misconception.
Let's look at these holding tank chemicals in terms of actual treatments.
• Both the Walex Porta-Pak and Bio-Pak shown above come in packs of 10. That means 10 treatments at a price of $9.71 or $11.38.
• The RV Digest-It holding tank treatment is regularly $39.95 (currently on-sale for $26.80) for 64 Treatments - 2 oz per treatment.
• Happy Campers Holding Tank Treatment comes in at $34.45 for 40 Treatments.
Now that we can view these products comparing them in terms of the number of treatments you'll get out of them - it's more of an apples-to-apples comparison.
Turns out Happy Campers is actually one of the better priced products in terms of number of treatments. If we break down price even further we can look at cost per treatment.
Let's look at these holding tank treatments in terms of cost per treatment.
• Walex Porta-Pak = $.97 per treatment.
• Walex Bio-Pak = $1.14 per treatment.
• RV Digest-It = $62 per treatment
• Happy Campers = $.86 per treatment for the 40 Treatment container and $.69 for the 64 Treatment Container.
*It's worth noting that in this comparison, I'm looking at the best RV holding tank chemicals that actually break down waste and toilet paper as well as treat odor. All of the products mentioned in this post meet the following criteria:
- Liquefy waste
- No Formaldehyde
- Easy to use
- Most Household Tissue Okay
- Will MASK or Eliminate odor
My only goal with this comparison is to disprove that the Happy Camper Holding Tank Treatment is the most expensive treatment and in fact is actually one of the best priced treatments when comparing top rated RV tank treatment.

I have an RV with a 25 gallon sewage tank and a boat with a 40 gallon sewage tank. I do extended camping in my RV and I spend the summers living aboard my boat in the Pacific Northwest inland waters. I have tried every other commercial product and Voodoo home recipe in my sewage tanks with no effect at all those most horrible odors that came from the vents of these tanks. I even would use those products at 4 and 5 times the recommended dosage. It was embarrassing to be near other campers or other boats. This Happy Campers Organic RV Holding Tank Treatment has truly left my sewage holding tanks odor free. I found this product after an entire day of web searching every available product and reviews and decided to try it. This stuff works for me and nothing else has.
